Updated May 16, 2026Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs (AMI Labs) was founded by Yann LeCun in November 2025 after his departure from Meta, where he served as Chief AI Scientist. The Paris-based company raised $1.03 billion in seed funding at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation — the largest seed round in European startup history.
AMI Labs is building on LeCun's JEPA (Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture) framework, which represents a fundamentally different approach to AI than the large language models that dominate the current landscape. Rather than predicting the next token in a sequence, JEPA learns by predicting abstract representations of the world — an approach LeCun argues is closer to how humans and animals develop understanding. Meta is an official partner in this effort.
The company's goal is to develop "world models" — AI systems that build internal representations of how the physical world works, enabling more robust reasoning, planning, and common sense than current LLMs can achieve. If successful, AMI Labs could pioneer the next paradigm shift in AI beyond the Transformer architecture that has dominated since 2017.
