AspenTech

AspenTech (Aspen Technology) is an industrial software company headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts, and since March 2025 a wholly owned subsidiary of Emerson (NYSE: EMR); its own shares no longer trade. It is best known for the process simulators Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS, used to design and troubleshoot plants, alongside software for predictive maintenance, advanced process control, production planning, industrial data management and electric grid operations. It appears here as an AI vendor: AspenTech markets what it calls Industrial AI, machine learning and generative AI features built into that engineering and operations software, sold through enterprise licensing rather than self-serve sign-up.

The company grew out of the ASPEN Project, joint research between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the US Department of Energy prompted by the 1970s energy crisis, and says that work produced the chemical industry's first computer-based modeling and simulation technology. In May 2022, Emerson contributed 6.0 billion dollars in cash plus its OSI grid software and Geological Simulation Software businesses, in exchange for 55 percent of the combined company. AspenTech bought the German industrial data company inmation in October 2022, and in August 2023 it dropped an agreed purchase of the Australian mining software company Micromine after a required Russian regulatory approval stalled. On March 12, 2025, Emerson completed its purchase of the remaining shares at 265 dollars each, about 7.2 billion dollars in total, and placed AspenTech in its Control Systems and Software segment.

Its defining AI pattern is the hybrid model: physics first, machine learning second. Most of what AspenTech sells is first-principles simulation and mathematical optimization, which is not machine learning at all, and the AI layer sits on top. In May 2021 it introduced Aspen Hybrid Models, which embed machine learning in Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS so a simulation can be calibrated against plant data. Aspen Mtell, acquired in October 2016 for 37 million dollars, uses machine learning to learn how equipment normally behaves and flag failures well before a breakdown.

The generative and agentic work is newer. Version 15 of its software, released in May 2025, added generative AI to Aspen OptiPlant 3D Layout, which proposes multiple plant layout options, and expanded Aspen Virtual Advisor (AVA) for Aspen DMC3 process control and Aspen Unified PIMS planning. In January 2026 a new Aspen Mtell release added AI that groups and prioritizes alerts and prescribes corrective actions. In May 2026 Emerson launched the AspenTech AVA platform, which pairs large language models with the company's first-principles models, shipped with four advisors, with a public demonstration site, AspenTech.ai. The same month it rebuilt the AspenTech Inmation operational technology (OT) data fabric as the data layer beneath it.

The honest framing: AspenTech's value rests on simulation and control software that has been embedded in refineries and chemical plants for decades. AI is a lever on top of that, and the agentic AVA platform is still at launch, with no customer results published alongside it. Among catalog peers, Siemens sells industrial software alongside its automation hardware, and Schneider Electric took the same majority-then-full-ownership path with AVEVA, completed in January 2023, then agreed in June 2026 to acquire Cognite. C3 AI, by contrast, sells cross-industry enterprise AI applications rather than process simulation.
