Updated June 15, 2026AT&T Inc. is one of the largest US telecommunications carriers and one of the oldest telecommunications companies in the world — originating as Bell Telephone Company in 1885 (founded by Alexander Graham Bell), then as American Telephone & Telegraph (the historical "Bell System" monopoly). After the 1984 court-ordered breakup, the modern AT&T emerged through a series of mergers and acquisitions (most consequentially the 2005 acquisition of SBC Communications, which technically reversed the merger direction but kept the AT&T brand). AT&T trades on NYSE as T with a market capitalization of approximately $165 billion as of 2026. The company's annual revenue is approximately $120 billion across mobile wireless, business wireline, and consumer wireline segments.
AT&T employs approximately 165,000 US workers. The company's mobile wireless business (~110 million postpaid subscribers in the US) is the second-largest behind Verizon, with T-Mobile having moved into first place after the Sprint merger. AT&T's wireline business serves enterprise customers and a declining residential consumer base. The company's strategic focus has been on simplifying the portfolio after the failed AT&T-Time Warner / WarnerMedia experiment (which culminated in the 2022 spin-off of WarnerMedia into the Warner Bros. Discovery merger). AT&T also operates a meaningful Mexico mobile wireless business and the AT&T Fiber broadband network (now over 30 million premises passed, growing rapidly).
AT&T's AI strategy is among the most publicly-developed enterprise generative-AI deployments. Ask AT&T (built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, launched 2023) is deployed across approximately 100,000 employees for use cases ranging from customer-service-agent assistance to network-engineering documentation to legal-and-compliance research. The company has publicly disclosed expansion targets for Ask AT&T into customer-facing applications. Network-operations AI uses ML extensively for fault-prediction, traffic-routing optimization, and self-organizing-network (SON) capabilities. The customer-care function uses AI for call-center deflection (chatbot first-line resolution) and agent-augmentation. The 2024-2025 satellite-direct-to-cell partnership with AST SpaceMobile adds an entirely new AI-assisted handover dimension. AT&T has also partnered with NVIDIA on AI-RAN (5G/6G AI-augmented radio access network) initiatives.
