ByteDance is a Chinese technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming, best known as the parent company of TikTok and Douyin (TikTok's Chinese counterpart). With an estimated valuation exceeding $300 billion, ByteDance is one of the most valuable private companies in the world and employs over 100,000 people globally.

ByteDance's AI capabilities are central to its business. The company's recommendation algorithms — which power TikTok's and Douyin's content feeds — are widely considered among the most sophisticated in the industry, driving the addictive short-video experience that captured over 1 billion global users. Beyond recommendations, ByteDance has developed the Doubao family of large language models, which power the Doubao AI assistant (one of China's most popular chatbots with hundreds of millions of users).

ByteDance is also a major player in AI infrastructure through Volcano Engine (its cloud computing platform) and has made significant investments in AI chips, video generation, and enterprise AI solutions. Its video generation line is Seedance, built by the company's Seed research group. Seedance 2.5, released in July 2026, produces up to 30 seconds in a single generation with multi-round extensions for longer pieces, and accepts up to 30 reference images alongside video and audio clips to steer the result. It reaches users inside the Jimeng and Doubao Pro apps rather than as a standalone product, with programmatic access still listed as coming soon. The company's massive user base and content library provide unparalleled training data advantages, while its global scale gives it deployment experience across diverse markets and regulatory environments.
