Updated June 15, 2026Calico (California Life Company) is an Alphabet subsidiary focused on understanding the biology of aging and developing interventions for age-related diseases. Founded in 2013 with a mandate to tackle one of humanity's greatest challenges, Calico operates with long-term research horizons and substantial funding from Google's parent company.
Calico uses AI and computational biology extensively in its drug discovery pipeline, applying machine learning to analyze molecular data, predict protein interactions, and identify potential therapeutic targets. The company has five clinical-stage drug candidates and approximately 20 preclinical programs targeting conditions including neurodegeneration, cancer, and immune-related diseases. Calico's research infrastructure includes advanced genomics, proteomics, and imaging capabilities augmented by AI-driven analysis.
Calico's 11-year research collaboration with AbbVie (which ended in November 2025) represented one of the largest pharma-tech partnerships in longevity science. The company is now pursuing new partnerships, including a $571 million deal with Mabwell Bioscience for IL-11 directed therapeutics. While Calico maintains a lower public profile than most Alphabet subsidiaries, it remains one of the most well-funded efforts to apply AI to the fundamental biology of aging.
