📋About Cognex

Updated September 2, 2026

Cognex is the largest dedicated machine-vision company in the world, founded in 1981 and headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts. For four decades it has built the cameras, smart sensors, and software that let factories "see" — reading barcodes, guiding robots, and inspecting parts on high-speed production lines.

Cognex's AI story is genuine and load-bearing, not a marketing layer. It built a deep-learning vision line from two acquisitions — ViDi in 2017 and Sualab in 2019 — and folded them into products like VisionPro Deep Learning, the In-Sight AI-enabled smart cameras, and the OneVision development environment launched to general availability in 2026. These use trained neural networks to catch defects that are too variable or subtle for traditional rule-based vision, such as scratches, assembly errors, and cosmetic flaws. AI-enabled vision is central to the company's own reported growth narrative, not an add-on.

Cognex is publicly traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker CGNX. The honest framing: it is the incumbent-scale standard for industrial machine vision, and its deep-learning tools are the AI counterweight that keeps it competitive against AI-native challengers — though buyers should still match the tool to the problem, since much of Cognex's installed base remains classic rule-based vision where deep learning is not needed.
