Updated July 2, 2026DermaSensor makes a handheld device that helps primary-care physicians assess skin lesions for cancer at the point of care. It shines light into a lesion and uses elastic-scattering spectroscopy plus an AI algorithm to output an immediate result — essentially "investigate further" versus "monitor" — covering all three common skin cancers: melanoma, basal cell, and squamous cell carcinoma. In January 2024 it became the first FDA-cleared AI device for skin-cancer detection in primary care, which matters because most skin checks begin with a generalist rather than a dermatologist, and earlier referral saves lives. The tool is a decision aid, not a diagnosis: it flags lesions that merit specialist attention, and its value depends on appropriate use and follow-up rather than on replacing dermatology.
