📋About FedEx

Updated September 16, 2026

FedEx Corporation is one of the largest US package delivery and logistics companies across its operating segments — FedEx Express (the original air-freight company that defined modern overnight delivery, founded by Frederick W. Smith in 1971), FedEx Ground (the ground-based small-package delivery operation), FedEx Freight (LTL freight), and FedEx Office (printing and business services). The company trades on NYSE as FDX and employs approximately 500,000 workers globally.

The 2024 announcement of the FedEx One Rate operational reorganization unified the historically-separate FedEx Express and FedEx Ground networks under shared operations and pricing — the largest operational restructuring in the company's history. The 2025 announcement of the FedEx Freight spin-off (separating the LTL business into a separate publicly-traded entity, expected to close late 2025 or 2026) is the largest portfolio restructuring in the company's history. FedEx's 2022 acquisition of ShopRunner extended the company into e-commerce-merchant services. FedEx's competitive position vs. Amazon Logistics (which has insourced increasingly larger fractions of Amazon-volume away from UPS and FedEx) has been a sustained strategic challenge for over a decade.

FedEx's AI strategy spans several layers. FedEx Surround (announced 2020 in partnership with Microsoft Azure) is the company's real-time logistics-visibility platform integrating sensor data, weather feeds, and operational data to predict shipment disruptions. AI-driven route optimization at FedEx Ground and FedEx Express is comparable to UPS ORION. Predictive maintenance for the FedEx aircraft fleet (the largest cargo airline globally by fleet size) uses ML extensively. AI-augmented customer service handles routine status and exception inquiries. The company's autonomous-delivery exploration includes early partnerships with Nuro (autonomous road delivery) and a small drone-delivery program. The 2024 announcement of the FedEx Dataworks operating model (treating FedEx's logistics data as a commercial product offered to enterprise customers) represents the company's strategic bet on monetizing logistics-AI capability beyond its own delivery operations. The Network 2.0 modernization initiative includes substantial AI-augmented sortation and routing investments across the unified FedEx One Rate network.
