Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is the AI research division of Alphabet, formed in 2023 by merging Google Brain and DeepMind. Co-founder Demis Hassabis, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024, is chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet; day-to-day leadership sits with Koray Kavukcuoglu, who reports directly to Google chief executive Sundar Pichai and oversees Gemini model development, frontier research and the Gemini app and developer teams.

The lab develops the Gemini family of multimodal models, spanning a fast, high-volume line that carries most of the product surface and a deeper-reasoning tier above it, plus security-tuned variants sold only through vetted programs to government cyber authorities and critical-infrastructure operators rather than openly. The deeper-reasoning tier skipped a generation: a promised Gemini 3.5 Pro never shipped, and on September 30, 2026 the lab announced Gemini 4 Argon instead, releasing it first only to vetted security teams in its Fairwind Program, without its usual cyber guardrails. On October 13 Argon became generally available through the Gemini API and to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with agentic coding in Antigravity limited to Ultra and free users excluded, while Fairwind members keep the unguarded version. On October 28, 2026 the lab previewed a successor, Gemini 4 Carbon, which it calls its strongest model and pitches mainly on finding and patching software vulnerabilities; it again went first to Fairwind cyber defenders, with no date for wider release. Its research heritage is unmatched: AlphaFold, which solved protein structure prediction, AlphaGo, the first AI to beat a world champion at Go, and foundational work in reinforcement learning and multimodal AI. AlphaEvolve, a coding agent that designs and optimizes algorithms through evolutionary search, has produced documented commercial wins from training-speed improvements to better DNA sequencing accuracy.

Beyond Gemini it ships Veo for video, Imagen for images, Gemma open-weight models, a research-assistant notebook, an agent-first developer environment and a personal always-on assistant. The lab's distribution footprint is the broadest in the industry: Gemini is embedded across Google Search, Workspace, Android and Google Cloud, and Search itself has been substantially rebuilt around Gemini-powered agents, with AI Mode available worldwide across 98 languages. That reach now extends past Google's own products — into roughly 4 million General Motors vehicles, a new laptop line built with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo, and most consequentially Apple, where Gemini powers the rebuilt Siri. That last partnership makes the lab a horizontal AI backbone across both the Android and iOS device populations rather than an internal-product vendor.

Two science programs show what the research heritage is for. A bioresilience posture developed jointly with Isomorphic Labs restricts misuse of frontier models while widening access for governments and scientists doing biosecurity work, spanning prevention (structure prediction and drug design, plus watermarking adapted to screen DNA synthesis orders), detection (pathogen characterization and cheap enough metagenomic sequencing to run as routine surveillance) and response (trusted-researcher access for vaccine design). And WeatherNext, published in *Nature*, predicts a tropical cyclone's track, intensity and wind structure from a single model rather than blending separate systems, buying more than a full day of extra lead time and producing a forecast in under a minute on one tensor processing unit. Google published the code and weights openly, and the US National Hurricane Center, the UK Met Office and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere use it operationally.
