📋About Google DeepMind

Updated September 16, 2026

Google DeepMind is the AI research division of Alphabet (Google's parent company), formed in 2023 by merging Google Brain and DeepMind. Co-founded by Demis Hassabis (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2024), who moved from chief executive to chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet in August 2026, the organization is one of the world's premier AI research labs and has responsibility for developing Google's most advanced AI systems. Day-to-day leadership sits with Koray Kavukcuoglu, promoted to senior vice president and reporting directly to Google chief executive Sundar Pichai, who oversees Gemini model development, frontier research, and the Gemini app and developer teams while retaining the chief AI architect title.

Google DeepMind develops the Gemini family of multimodal models, currently led by Gemini 3.8 Flash, shipped September 2, 2026 — the third Flash generation in six weeks, and the line that now carries Google's frontier story, since the deeper-reasoning Gemini 3.5 Pro announced in May 2026 remains partner-testing only with no public endpoint or pricing. A security-tuned sibling, Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, reports 47.2 percent first-attempt on CWE-Bench patching but is not sold openly: access runs through the vetted Fairwind Program for government cyber authorities, critical-infrastructure operators and core platforms. The lab's research heritage includes AlphaFold (which solved the protein structure prediction problem), AlphaGo (first AI to defeat a world champion Go player), and pioneering work in reinforcement learning, neural architecture search, and multimodal AI. AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered coding agent that designs and optimizes algorithms via evolutionary search, has produced documented commercial wins ranging from training-speed improvements at Klarna to materially better DNA sequencing accuracy.

Beyond Gemini and AlphaEvolve, Google DeepMind develops specialized products including Veo (video generation), Imagen (image generation), Gemma (open-weight models), and NotebookLM (AI research assistant), plus agentic products like Gemini Spark (personal always-on assistant), Google Antigravity 2.0 (agent-first developer IDE), Gemini Omni (multimodal image, audio, and text to video), and ERA (Gemini-powered scientific code generator). The lab's distribution footprint is uniquely broad: Gemini is embedded across Google Search, Workspace, Android, and Google Cloud — making the lab uniquely positioned to both advance AI science and deploy it at unprecedented scale.

Google Search has been substantially rebuilt around Gemini-powered agents, with Gemini 3.5 Flash now the default model behind AI Mode worldwide across 98 languages. Gemini's distribution has also expanded beyond Google's own product family through partnerships with General Motors (Gemini Live in roughly 4 million Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles), the new Googlebooks laptop line (with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo), and most consequentially Apple (Gemini powers the new standalone Siri app at WWDC June 2026). The Apple partnership makes Google DeepMind a horizontal AI backbone across the Android and iOS device populations, shifting the lab's role from internal-product-only vendor to platform-level AI infrastructure for the consumer electronics industry.

In July 2026 Google DeepMind announced a first-of-its-kind research partnership with the independent film studio A24, pairing DeepMind researchers with filmmakers to develop new creative tools and production workflows; Google also took an undisclosed equity stake in the studio. The open-ended collaboration signals the lab's push to shape how frontier AI enters professional filmmaking — a notable move amid ongoing industry tension over AI's role in creative work.

Google DeepMind has also formalized a bioresilience posture governing how its models meet biology, developed jointly with Isomorphic Labs. The stated approach is twofold: restrict misuse of frontier models while widening access for governments and scientists doing biosecurity work, pursued through more than 15 partnerships with government bodies, biosecurity organizations, and research groups. In practice it spans prevention (AlphaFold and Isomorphic's drug-design engine, plus watermarking adapted from SynthID to screen DNA synthesis orders), detection (AlphaGenome and protein-function annotation for characterizing pathogens, and AlphaEvolve tuned to make metagenomic sequencing cheap enough to run as routine surveillance), and response (trusted-researcher access to current systems for vaccine design, and a unit inside Isomorphic Labs aimed at designing countermeasures quickly when a novel pathogen emerges).

The lab's weather work reached a comparable milestone in August 2026, when WeatherNext was published in *Nature*. Built for tropical cyclones, it predicts a storm's track, intensity, and wind structure from a single model rather than blending separate systems, which buys more than a full day of additional lead time — three-day forecasts now match what earlier models achieved at two days. It runs on a 28-kilometer grid and produces a forecast in under one minute on a single tensor processing unit. Google published the code and model weights openly, and the US National Hurricane Center, the UK Met Office, and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere use it operationally.

WeatherNextClimate & Weather AI

Google DeepMind's weather model family. The cyclone model (Nature, August 2026) predicts storm track, intensity and wind structure jointly, gains more than a day of lead time, runs in under a minute on one TPU, and is used operationally by the US National Hurricane Center; code and weights are open. WeatherNext 3 (September 3, 2026) is the general global forecaster: hourly rather than six-hourly, 5km surface resolution, running behind Google Search, Maps, the Gemini app and Earth Engine.

AlphaGenomeScientific Research AI

Google DeepMind's variant-effect model, predicting how a single-letter change to human DNA affects gene regulation. Its Atlas release scores all nine billion possible single-nucleotide variants as a one-petabyte dataset, free for non-commercial research with commercial access via Google Cloud.

Gemini Robotics 2Robotics & Embodied AI

Google DeepMind's embodied-AI model family — an embodied reasoning model that plans and orchestrates robot tasks, a vision-language-action model for motor control, and an on-device variant. Headline capability is whole-body control for humanoids.
