📋About Helm.ai

Updated July 22, 2026

Helm.ai is an autonomous-driving software company founded in 2016 and headquartered in Redwood City, California, that supplies AI to automakers rather than operating vehicles. Backed by Honda — with multi-year advanced-driver-assistance and autonomous-driving production deals — it takes an explicitly AI-first, vision-only approach, scaling from Level 2-plus assistance toward Level 4 without relying on high-definition maps or lidar.

Its technical foundation is a set of generative-simulation and perception foundation models (branded VidGen, GenSim, and WorldGen) and an approach it calls Factored Embodied AI. In early 2026 it introduced the vision-only Helm.ai Driver.

The honest framing: Helm.ai is a genuine AI-first software supplier — the perception and generative-simulation models are the whole product, not a bolt-on. Its vision-only, map-free bet is technically ambitious and, like all autonomy approaches, still being proven; its business depends on automakers adopting and shipping its software.
