Kodiak AI

Kodiak AI (formerly Kodiak Robotics) is an autonomous-trucking company founded in 2018 and headquartered in Mountain View, California. It builds the Kodiak Driver, a Level 4 self-driving system that operates heavy trucks without a human in the cab, and in 2025 it became the first pure-play autonomous-trucking company to reach the public markets, trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker KDK after a SPAC merger that valued it around 2.5 billion dollars.

Unlike companies still testing with safety drivers, Kodiak reached genuinely driverless commercial operations first in the rugged, private-road environment of the Permian Basin oil fields, hauling freight for customers day and night. Its strategy is to prove the technology in controlled commercial settings before expanding onto public highways.

The honest framing: the self-driving stack is unambiguously AI — learned perception, prediction, and planning are the whole product. But autonomous trucking as a business is still early and capital-intensive, and driverless operations remain limited in scope; Kodiak's public-market debut is a milestone for the sector, not proof the economics are settled.
