📋About LexisNexis

Updated June 15, 2026

LexisNexis is one of the two dominant legal-research platforms in the United States (alongside Thomson Reuters Westlaw) and a major provider of news, analytics, and risk-intelligence data globally. The company traces its origins to Mead Data Central, founded in 1973, which built one of the first online legal-research databases. After several ownership changes, LexisNexis became a subsidiary of Reed Elsevier (now RELX, public on LSE: REL and NYSE: RELX with a market capitalization around $70 billion).

The company operates two main business lines. LexisNexis Legal & Professional serves law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies with case-law databases, statutes, regulatory materials, secondary-source treatises, and litigation analytics through the Lexis+ research platform. Customers span the AmLaw 200, all major US law schools, and most US federal and state agencies, plus international markets in the UK, France, Canada, Australia, and Asia. The company also operates Nexis (news and business information for media, government, and corporate communications) and the Practical Guidance business (workflow tools for transactional lawyers).

LexisNexis Risk Solutions is the second business — a substantial provider of identity-verification, fraud-detection, anti-money-laundering, and underwriting analytics tools used across financial services, insurance, healthcare, government, and corporate risk-management functions. This business operates somewhat independently from the legal-research business and has been a major driver of RELX's growth.

Lexis+ AI is LexisNexis's strategic generative-AI platform — a Lexis+ extension that combines RAG-based access to the Lexis case-law and statutory database with conversational AI for legal-research queries, brief drafting, contract analysis, and document summarization. Launched in 2023, Lexis+ AI competes directly with Thomson Reuters' CoCounsel platform and the standalone Harvey AI offering. The product is positioned to leverage LexisNexis's existing trust relationships and AmLaw 100 deployment footprint.
