Updated September 16, 2026Micron Technology is a leading semiconductor company specializing in memory and storage solutions, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Micron is one of only three major manufacturers of DRAM and NAND flash memory globally (alongside Samsung and SK Hynix).
Micron plays a critical role in the AI supply chain as a manufacturer of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), the specialized memory chips that sit on top of AI accelerators like NVIDIA's H200 and AMD's MI300X. HBM provides the massive memory bandwidth that AI chips need to process large models efficiently. Micron holds approximately 20% of the global HBM market. It reached high-volume production of HBM4 in March 2026 — the 36 gigabyte 12-high stacks designed for NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform, running at more than 2.8 terabytes per second and better than 20 percent more power-efficient than HBM3e — alongside continued HBM3e supply for the installed base of H200 and Blackwell accelerators.
Beyond HBM, Micron's server DRAM and enterprise SSDs are essential components in every AI data center. The company's CXL (Compute Express Link) memory expansion products enable larger memory pools for AI inference workloads. As AI models grow larger and data center buildouts accelerate, Micron's memory technology becomes increasingly critical — you cannot train or run an AI model without the memory chips that store the model weights and intermediate computations.
In August 2026 Micron committed $10 billion over the following decade to Micron Research Labs, a long-horizon memory research hub anchored on a flagship campus in Boise with groundbreaking expected in 2027. The lab is aimed at memory and compute architectures, packaging and semiconductor manufacturing more than ten years out rather than at the next product cycle, with Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin, Applied Materials, Lam Research and imec as named partners. It is separate from the more than $250 billion Micron has already pledged to US manufacturing and research.
