Updated August 1, 2026Midjourney is an independent AI research lab founded in 2022 by David Holz (co-founder of Leap Motion), known for creating one of the most popular and artistically capable AI image generation tools. The company operates with a small team and is profitable without venture capital funding — a rarity in the AI industry.
Midjourney's image generation model is widely regarded as producing the most aesthetically sophisticated AI-generated images, with a distinctive artistic quality that has made it the tool of choice for professional artists, designers, illustrators, and creative directors. The tool is accessed primarily through Discord, where users type text prompts to generate images. Midjourney V6 and subsequent versions offer photorealism, detailed character consistency, and nuanced artistic control.
Midjourney has attracted over 16 million users despite its unconventional Discord-based interface. The company is expanding into 3D generation and web-based access. Midjourney's success demonstrates that focused excellence in a single capability (beautiful image generation) can build a massive, profitable business even in a market dominated by well-funded competitors like DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and FLUX.
Midjourney is at the center of a landmark generative-AI copyright case. In 2025 Disney and Universal — later joined by Warner Bros. — sued the company, alleging its image model was trained on and can reproduce their copyrighted characters without a license. It is one of the first major Hollywood copyright suits against an AI image generator and a closely watched test of how fair-use doctrine applies to generative tools. Midjourney has mounted a fair-use defense and pushed to widen discovery into whether the studios themselves use generative AI internally — arguing the case could help define the legal boundaries for training image models on copyrighted work.
Midjourney has also moved beyond software into hardware with Midjourney Medical, a dedicated health division whose first product is a full-body "Ultrasonic CT" scanner. The device uses roughly 500,000 ultrasound transducers and AI reconstruction to image the entire body in about 60 seconds with no radiation, built on an exclusive license to Butterfly Network's ultrasound-on-chip technology. Midjourney plans to debut the scanner in a San Francisco "spa" in late 2027 and aims to deploy 50,000 machines worldwide by 2031 — a bet that its expertise in generative image reconstruction can translate from digital art into medical imaging.
