📋About Novo Nordisk

Updated September 19, 2026

Novo Nordisk is a publicly traded pharmaceutical company headquartered in Bagsværd, Denmark, listed in Copenhagen and trading in New York as an American depositary receipt (NYSE: NVO). It makes the semaglutide medicines Ozempic and Wegovy and has a century-long history in insulin. On September 14, 2026 it rebranded as simply Novo, with a new logo and a culture framework called The Novo Way; the legal name remains Novo Nordisk. The company is controlled by the Novo Nordisk Foundation through its holding company, and it competes most directly with Eli Lilly in obesity and diabetes. It appears here not as an AI vendor but as a large pharma AI adopter, and it sells no AI product.

What distinguishes Novo is a multi-vendor model: in five months of 2026 it signed strategic AI partnerships with three of the largest AI and cloud companies. In April it partnered with OpenAI to embed AI across drug discovery, manufacturing, supply chain, commercial operations and corporate functions, with pilots first and full integration targeted by the end of 2026, plus AI-literacy training for its workforce. In August it named Amazon Web Services its preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner, opening a co-innovation hub at its King's Cross site in London where both companies' scientists work to shorten the path from a drug target to a first human dose; the companies say the work has already cut clinical documentation time and put AI productivity tools in the hands of more than 25,000 employees. In September it began a collaboration with Anthropic to co-develop AI for specific drug-discovery bottlenecks, test the Claude Science workbench in selected research workflows, and use Claude models for software development.

Earlier, in June 2025, Novo agreed with NVIDIA to run research on Gefion, Denmark's national AI supercomputer, which is operated by the Danish Centre for AI Innovation, co-founded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The planned work covers single-cell models that predict how cells respond to drug candidates, models that design molecules with drug-like properties, and biomedical language models trained on the company's scientific literature. Novo is also a customer of the protein-design company Cradle.

The honest framing: Novo's value rests on its obesity and diabetes franchise, where competition from Lilly has intensified, with AI as a speed and efficiency lever layered on top. Its partnerships describe intentions and pilots more than measured results so far. For learners it is the clearest example of the multi-vendor adopter, a large incumbent that hedges across several frontier labs and clouds rather than betting on one, and a useful contrast to Merck's single enterprise platform, Gilead's specialist partnerships and Lilly's productized models.
