📋About Nuro

Updated August 26, 2026

Nuro is an autonomous-driving company founded in 2016 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, valued around 6 billion dollars. It began by building small driverless delivery pods, but in 2024 it pivoted decisively: rather than operating its own fleet, Nuro now licenses its Level 4 autonomy software — the Nuro Driver — to automakers and mobility platforms. A 2025 deal with Uber and Lucid covers tens of thousands of robotaxis over several years, with the Nuro Driver built on NVIDIA's Drive Thor compute platform.

That licensing model is the key to understanding Nuro today: it is an autonomy-as-a-platform supplier, not a fleet operator or delivery company.

The honest framing: the Nuro Driver is a genuine Level 4 autonomy stack — load-bearing AI. The strategic bet is that supplying autonomy software to partners is a better business than operating vehicles directly; that thesis is still unproven at scale, and Nuro's success now depends heavily on its licensees shipping vehicles.
