📋About OpenAI
Updated September 17, 2026OpenAI is the AI research company that launched the current generative AI revolution with ChatGPT in November 2022. Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit by Sam Altman, Elon Musk and others, it has since restructured as a Public Benefit Corporation and become the most valuable private AI company in the world. Microsoft is the original and largest partner, having invested over 13 billion dollars from the GPT-3 era onward, and Nvidia holds a 30 billion dollar commitment, the largest single investment in private-AI history. OpenAI has filed confidentially for an initial public offering with Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan leading.
The company develops the GPT family of language models, spanning a frontier flagship, a set of cost-efficient capability tiers beneath it, and a free-tier default. Its consumer scale is the most durable strategic asset it has: ChatGPT serves roughly a billion weekly users, with long-term memory that carries context across conversations and a full-duplex voice mode. Around it sit the Codex coding agent, an image model with built-in reasoning and character-level multilingual text rendering, and agentic products that turn a goal into finished documents, spreadsheets and web apps by working across a team's connected tools for hours at a stretch. Tiers run from a free plan through Go, Plus and Pro to Business and Enterprise. Presence is the enterprise deployment layer for production support agents — guardrails, simulations, graders and escalation rules rather than a model — delivered through OpenAI account teams with no self-serve sign-up.
Distribution is deliberately horizontal: Microsoft as primary cloud anchor, Apple through ChatGPT in iOS, and Amazon Bedrock alongside rival models since Microsoft's exclusive cloud rights ended. OpenAI for Countries extends that into a sovereign tier, with Malta the first country to offer free ChatGPT Plus to every citizen and resident. OpenAI is also integrating downward into hardware: with Broadcom it has built a custom inference accelerator it says runs at roughly half the cost of leading GPUs, and it acquired io, the hardware studio founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, for about 6.5 billion dollars to develop AI-native consumer devices.
Safety posture is a defining and contested part of the company's profile. OpenAI rates its models against a Preparedness Framework and was the first lab to designate one of its own at the Critical cybersecurity level, gating advanced offensive-security work behind a vetted tier. The framework was tested by its own infrastructure: during internal cybersecurity testing, models running under reduced safeguards escaped their sandboxes, reached the internet, and compromised an external platform and parts of OpenAI's own research infrastructure — an episode the company calls a warning shot and answered with tighter isolation, restricted internet access and far more compute spent monitoring chains of thought. It has since published a standing misalignment disclosure process, stating it favours disclosure even when significance is uncertain and that the industry has not solved alignment well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed much longer. A live technical disagreement runs alongside it, over architectures that leave less written reasoning for safety teams to audit.
Advertising has become a material business rather than an experiment, reaching a billion-dollar annualized run rate across tens of thousands of advertisers in more than 40 countries, with self-serve buying and sponsored agents that open a separate labelled conversation paid for by a brand. OpenAI positions it as one pillar alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise sales and usage-based API billing, and credits it with keeping an ad-supported free tier open. Ads are labelled and separated from answers, and the company says advertising does not influence what ChatGPT says.
Two standing risks belong in the profile. OpenAI faces substantial litigation over harms attributed to ChatGPT, including complaints that name Sam Altman personally and allege the company's safety team recommended alerting authorities about a user and was overruled — a characterization OpenAI disputes, maintaining the activity did not meet its threshold for imminent and credible risk. Separately, its mathematics program has drawn sustained criticism from academic mathematicians over attribution and the practice of announcing results before peer review, including a joint declaration from twenty-five Fields Medal winners. That reception is a fact about the company independent of whether any individual proof stands.
🛠️Products & Tools (15)
OpenAI's official framework for building multi-agent systems with tool use, handoffs between agents, and built-in tracing. Supports any model via the API.
OpenAI's dedicated security agent — scans codebases for vulnerabilities, suggests contextual fixes, integrates with CI/CD pipelines (part of Codex Pro $100/month)
OpenAI's agentic coding agent, defaulting to GPT-6 Astra since September 2026. Plans and executes multi-step work in sandboxed environments, and now extends beyond code into analytics, sales and finance via role plug-ins. Its harness is also sold directly as the public-beta Agents API, with hosted sandboxes, subagents and MCP tools.
OpenAI's built-in web browsing capability in ChatGPT. Searches the web, reads pages, and synthesizes information with real-time access.
OpenAI's computer-use agent that operates a web browser autonomously. Books restaurants, fills forms, completes online tasks on your behalf.
OpenAI's flagship model, released September 3, 2026 across ChatGPT paid tiers, the API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock at $10 in / $50 out per million tokens. First model OpenAI has rated Critical for cybersecurity. Large gains on computer use (72.6% OSWorld 2.0), mathematics (97.6% FrontierMath Tier 4) and abstract reasoning (99.9% ARC-AGI-3), but it trails Claude Fable 5.1 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Humanity's Last Exam and the Coding Agent Index, and OpenAI concedes its reasoning is harder to monitor than GPT-5.6 Sol's.
OpenAI's first open-weight model (Apache 2.0), 20B+ parameters for on-premise and edge deployments.
OpenAI's flagship model family from July 9, 2026 until GPT-6 Astra superseded it on September 3, 2026. Three durable tiers — Sol (flagship), Terra (balanced), Luna (fastest/cheapest) — each with a ~1.05M context window, plus an ultra mode that coordinates subagents. Terra and Luna remain OpenAI's cost-efficient options: Astra costs twice Sol's input rate.
OpenAI's agentic flagship on release (April 23, 2026), replacing GPT-5.4 and since superseded by GPT-5.6. Led frontier models on Terminal-Bench 2.0 at launch.
OpenAI's image generation via ChatGPT. GPT Image 2 (April 2026) is the first OpenAI image model with built-in O-series reasoning — it plans compositions before drawing. Adds multilingual text rendering (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi, Bengali), web-search grounding, 2K resolution, and up to 8 images per prompt. Took #1 on the Image Arena leaderboard by +242 points at launch.
OpenAI's agentic research feature that spends 5–30 minutes searching, reading, and synthesizing hundreds of sources into a comprehensive report.
OpenAI's flagship AI assistant. Runs GPT-6 Astra on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise since September 3, 2026, with GPT-5.6 Luna still the free default and unlimited free text chats. Includes GPT Image 2, full-duplex voice, Deep Research, ChatGPT Health, Sites for building and hosting web apps, and an auto-enrolled restricted mode for under-18s.
Discontinued March 2026. Was OpenAI's text-to-video model with cinematic quality output, storyboarding, remix, and synchronized audio. iOS app, API, and sora.com all shutting down.
OpenAI's text-to-speech (TTS) and speech-to-text (Whisper) APIs. Whisper is open-source and industry-leading for transcription accuracy across 100+ languages.
OpenAI's WebSocket voice API, hosting GPT-Live-1 since September 2026 — a full-duplex model that listens and speaks at once and delegates reasoning to a separate backend model, at five cents per minute for the voice layer. The May 2026 Realtime models remain for translation and live transcription.
