Palantir Technologies is a data analytics and AI company founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, and others, with roots in technology originally developed for US intelligence agencies. The publicly traded company provides data integration and analysis platforms to government agencies and large enterprises.

Palantir's two main products — Gotham (government) and Foundry (enterprise) — integrate disparate data sources into unified operational platforms where AI and human analysts can collaborate. The company's Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) brings generative AI to these environments, enabling users to interact with complex operational data through natural language, deploy AI agents that take actions in enterprise systems, and build AI-powered workflows without deep technical expertise.

Palantir's deep government relationships (US military, intelligence agencies, allied nations) and security clearances create a competitive moat that is extremely difficult for competitors to replicate. In an August 2026 shareholder letter he wrote that there are "Marxist overtones and undertones" to the business, contending that model providers persuade enterprises to migrate their intellectual property and expertise into someone else's model, then compete with those same customers using it. Palantir's counter-positioning follows directly from the claim: the software is deliberately model-agnostic, and the customer keeps the data, the workflows and the outputs. Whether or not the framing persuades, it is the clearest statement yet of how Palantir intends to sell against the companies whose models it also runs.
