Palantir Technologies is a data analytics and AI company founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, and others, with roots in technology originally developed for US intelligence agencies. The publicly traded company provides data integration and analysis platforms to government agencies and large enterprises.

Palantir's two main products — Gotham (government) and Foundry (enterprise) — integrate disparate data sources into unified operational platforms where AI and human analysts can collaborate. The company's Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) brings generative AI to these environments, enabling users to interact with complex operational data through natural language, deploy AI agents that take actions in enterprise systems, and build AI-powered workflows without deep technical expertise.

Palantir's deep government relationships (US military, intelligence agencies, allied nations) and security clearances create a competitive moat that is extremely difficult for competitors to replicate. The company's enterprise business has grown rapidly as commercial customers adopt AIP for supply chain optimization, financial analysis, and operational decision-making. Investors have treated the company as a bridge between enterprise data and AI capability, and the commercial segment has become the faster-growing half of the business.

In 2026, Palantir's AIP and Maven Smart System were reported to help power the theater-level command-and-control software for the US “Golden Dome” homeland missile-defense initiative.

A Pentagon review reported by Bloomberg in September 2026 placed Maven at the center of a mass-casualty error. Investigators examining the February 2026 strike on Shajarah Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, Iran — which killed more than 150 people, at least 123 of them children — found that staff at US Central Command had leaned too heavily on the artificial intelligence inside Maven when clearing a target the system surfaced from outdated intelligence. The review describes a chain of failures around the tool rather than a single one: analyst notes from 2019 sat in a system disconnected from the targeting database, and Central Command's civilian harm mitigation team had been cut from ten people to one. Palantir says it is not responsible for the underlying data nor for identifying intelligence deficiencies, and has since added functionality that re-reviews intelligence for disqualifying factors and flags inconsistencies a human review might miss.

Chief executive Alex Karp has turned that architecture into an explicit market argument against the frontier AI labs. In an August 2026 shareholder letter he wrote that there are "Marxist overtones and undertones" to the business, contending that model providers persuade enterprises to migrate their intellectual property and expertise into someone else's model, then compete with those same customers using it. Palantir's counter-positioning follows directly from the claim: the software is deliberately model-agnostic, and the customer keeps the data, the workflows and the outputs. Whether or not the framing persuades, it is the clearest statement yet of how Palantir intends to sell against the companies whose models it also runs.
