Pix4D is the Swiss-built survey-grade photogrammetry standard. Founded as a 2011 spinoff from EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Lausanne, Switzerland, Pix4D specializes in structure-from-motion algorithms that turn aerial imagery into orthomosaics, digital surface models, 3D point clouds, and survey-grade deliverables. Where DroneDeploy emphasizes ease-of-use and cloud-based workflows, Pix4D emphasizes precision and control — making it the preferred photogrammetry tool for licensed land surveyors, mining operations, and infrastructure-grade civil engineering. The product lineup spans multiple verticals. Pix4Dmapper is the flagship general-purpose desktop product. Pix4Dmatic targets large-scale survey-grade workflows (corridor mapping, government topography). Pix4Dfields specializes in precision agriculture with multispectral imagery and farm-management-system integration. Pix4Dcloud is the online processing tier for collaboration. Pix4Dcatch + viDoc extend the platform beyond drone-only workflows into mobile ground-based reality capture with iPhone/iPad and an optional RTK GPS receiver. Pix4D's mature SfM engine has over a decade of refinement, supporting ground control points, Trimble GPS receivers, and survey-grade datum projections that make outputs legally-defensible for licensed surveying. The transition from perpetual licenses to subscriptions has frustrated some long-time customers, but the platform remains the survey-precision standard globally. AI capabilities (object detection, anomaly detection) are catching up with DroneDeploy but still trail in breadth.
