Updated June 15, 2026Precision Neuroscience is a brain-computer interface (BCI) company founded in 2021 by Benjamin Rapoport, a neurosurgeon who co-founded Neuralink before departing to pursue a different approach. The company develops minimally invasive brain interfaces that can be implanted without penetrating brain tissue.
Precision's Layer 7 Cortical Interface uses a thin, flexible electrode array that sits on the surface of the brain rather than being inserted into it (as Neuralink's implant does). This approach — called electrocorticography (ECoG) — significantly reduces surgical risk and potential brain damage while still capturing useful neural signals. The device can be placed through a small craniotomy in a procedure that takes minutes, compared to the hours required for penetrating implants.
Precision's less invasive approach trades some signal resolution for dramatically improved safety and accessibility, potentially enabling BCI technology to reach a much larger patient population. The company is pursuing clinical applications in communication restoration for patients with paralysis and neurological conditions, competing with Neuralink and Synchron in the emerging BCI market.
