📋About Roche

Updated September 19, 2026

Roche is a Swiss pharmaceutical and diagnostics group headquartered in Basel (OTC: RHHBY), founded in 1896 and best known for cancer medicines such as Tecentriq and Herceptin, the multiple sclerosis drug Ocrevus, and the cobas diagnostic instruments used in hospital laboratories worldwide. Its US arm, Genentech, runs much of the group's research from South San Francisco, and its AI work is covered within this profile. It appears here not as an AI vendor but as a large pharma and diagnostics AI adopter, although its diagnostics division does sell AI-enabled software, chiefly the navify Digital Pathology platform, which hosts image-analysis algorithms built mostly by partners.

Roche's defining pattern is compute-builder: it has bought and runs its own AI hardware at a scale unusual for a drug maker. In March 2026 it announced 2,176 NVIDIA Blackwell graphics processing units (GPUs) installed on its own premises, bringing its combined on-premise and cloud fleet above 3,500 GPUs across the United States and Europe, which Roche describes as the pharmaceutical industry's largest announced hybrid-cloud AI factory. The machines serve drug discovery, manufacturing digital twins, diagnostics and digital pathology. They build on a multi-year collaboration between Genentech and NVIDIA signed in November 2023 around what Genentech calls lab in a loop: models propose molecules, the lab tests them, and the results retrain the models.

The models themselves come from acquisition and partnership. In August 2021 Genentech acquired Prescient Design, a deep-learning protein design group founded by researchers from New York University and the Flatiron Institute, which now designs antibodies inside that loop. Earlier bets include an October 2020 small-molecule partnership with Genesis Therapeutics and a December 2021 collaboration with Recursion in neuroscience and oncology. Genentech also uses Anthropic's Claude models: Anthropic lists it as a customer, and an Amazon Web Services case study describes a research agent built on Claude through Amazon Bedrock that Genentech expects to automate more than 43,000 hours of biomarker validation work.

On the diagnostics side Roche mixes platform and purchase. In September 2024 it opened navify Digital Pathology to more than 20 algorithms from eight outside developers. It had worked with PathAI since 2021 on companion diagnostic algorithms, and in May 2026 agreed to acquire the company for 750 million dollars upfront plus up to 300 million dollars in milestone payments, with closing expected in the second half of 2026 subject to regulatory approval. Roche has also owned Flatiron Health since April 2018, in a deal valued at 1.9 billion dollars. Flatiron sells oncology electronic health record software and real-world data, so it is primarily a data business rather than an AI model maker, and it runs as an independent affiliate.

The honest framing: Roche's value rests on its medicines and on a diagnostics business already embedded in laboratories, and AI is a lever on top of both. The GPU fleet, the Prescient Design team and the Claude research agent are measurable investments, but their payoff in approved drugs is not yet demonstrated, and the 43,000-hour figure is a projection rather than a result. Where Gilead procures specialists and Novo Nordisk spreads work across several model vendors, Roche sits closer to Moderna and Eli Lilly in building capacity in-house, while adding something none of them has: a diagnostics channel through which PathAI's software can reach pathology laboratories directly.
