Updated May 16, 2026Synopsys is the dominant electronic design automation (EDA) vendor, providing the software platform that virtually every modern semiconductor chip is designed with. Founded in 1986 by Aart de Geus, David Gregory, and Bill Krieger as a spinoff from General Electric's Microelectronics Center, the company went public on NASDAQ as SNPS in 1992 and has a market capitalization of approximately $80 billion as of 2026. FY2024 revenue was approximately $6.1 billion across roughly 20,000 employees worldwide.
The Synopsys product portfolio spans the full chip-design workflow: digital design implementation (Fusion Compiler, IC Compiler II, Design Compiler), verification (VCS simulator, Verdi debug, Formal Verification), custom and analog design (Custom Compiler, FineSim), test (TestMAX), and silicon engineering. Beyond core EDA, Synopsys is a major IP vendor β providing pre-designed building blocks (memory controllers, USB, PCIe, networking IP) that chip designers integrate into their designs β and is the leading vendor of software-security analysis tools through the Black Duck and Coverity acquisitions.
Synopsys.ai is the company's strategic AI bet, anchored by DSO.ai (Design Space Optimization AI) β the industry's first reinforcement-learning-driven EDA tool, which automates the iterative process of chip-implementation optimization (floorplan, placement, routing) that historically required dozens of expert-engineer iterations. DSO.ai has been deployed at major customers including AMD, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Intel, Samsung, and Google. The broader Synopsys.ai platform includes VSO.ai (verification space optimization) and TSO.ai (test space optimization). The pending $35 billion acquisition of Ansys (the leading multiphysics simulation vendor) β announced January 2024 and expected to close in 2025 β would extend Synopsys's platform into mechanical, fluid, and electromagnetic simulation, creating a unified ChipsToSystems platform spanning digital, analog, photonic, and physical systems.
