Tandem Health

Tandem Health is a Stockholm-based maker of an AI medical assistant for European clinicians, privately held and founded in 2023 by Lukas Saari, Oscar Boldt-Christmas and Oliver Åstrand. Its core product is an ambient AI scribe: it listens to a consultation, transcribes it and drafts a structured clinical note that the clinician reviews and signs, alongside a coding assistant and a clinical decision support tool. Unlike the drug makers and hospital groups in the catalog, Tandem is an AI vendor, and it sells directly: a clinician can sign up for a free plan or a paid Pro plan on its own site, while hospitals and care groups buy enterprise licences. It is unrelated to Tandem Diabetes Care, the American insulin-pump maker.

Its defining pattern is regulation-first. In February 2026 its coding assistant was certified as a Class IIa medical device under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), and in May 2026 the scribe followed, which Tandem calls the first AI scribe in Europe to reach that class. Class IIa means an independent notified body audits the clinical and technical evidence, where Class I lets a maker certify itself. That same month Tandem published the findings of an inspection by Sweden's Medical Products Agency, which concluded that classifying Tandem's own scribe as Class I was not compatible with the regulation. Tandem argues the same logic applies to every AI scribe; that is the company's reading, not a ruling on its rivals. A clinical decision support tool, also certified Class IIa, went live for selected customers in June 2026.

Growth came through distribution partners and one acquisition. In April 2025 the UK software company Accurx launched Accurx Scribe, powered by Tandem, which the two companies said would be made available to more than 200,000 NHS professionals, a figure that measures access rather than active use. In January 2026 Tandem bought Juvoly, a Dutch AI scribe it says serves more than 1,500 GP practices, and in March 2026 a four-year agreement with University Hospitals of Leicester and University Hospitals of Northamptonshire gave more than 10,000 clinicians access. It entered Italy in April 2026 through a partnership with the hospital group Humanitas.

The money followed. A 50 million dollar Series A led by Kinnevik closed in June 2025, and in September 2026 Tandem announced a 100 million dollar Series B led by the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, bringing its total funding to 160 million dollars. The company says it is used by 10,000 care organisations across 14 European markets and connects to more than 130 medical record systems, and it plans to grow from a scribe into what it calls an AI-native clinic operating system.

The honest framing: Tandem's value rests on two things, drafts accurate enough that clinicians trust them, and the regulatory paperwork that lets European health systems buy them. The most cited result, a 29 percent drop in documentation time across 375,000 notes written by 1,295 clinicians, came from an evaluation run by the healthcare group Capio, whose clinicians use the tool, and was posted as a preprint rather than a peer-reviewed paper. Where Abridge built its lead through deep Epic integration in American health systems, and Paris-based Nabla competes for many of the same European buyers, Tandem is betting that certification and local integrations are the moat.
