Updated June 15, 2026Target Corporation is one of the largest US general-merchandise retailers, with approximately $110 billion in annual revenue across its ~2,000 stores and digital channels. Founded in 1902 as Dayton Dry Goods Company in Minneapolis, the first Target-branded store opened in 1962 (the same year as Walmart and Kmart, the so-called "year of retail"). Target trades on NYSE as TGT with a market capitalization of approximately $70 billion as of 2026 and employs approximately 440,000 US workers. The company is known for its design-forward private-label brands (Cat & Jack, Goodfellow & Co, A New Day, Threshold, Up & Up, Market Pantry) and its long-running collaborations with high-end designers. Target's grocery business — though smaller than Kroger or Walmart's — is meaningful at ~$25 billion annually.
The Target Circle loyalty program has approximately 100 million members and is a major engine of personalization and frequency. Target+ marketplace (the third-party-seller platform) and the Roundel retail-media network provide additional revenue streams. RedCard and the broader Target Loyalty platform integrate with Target Circle for offers and rewards. Target's same-day services (Drive Up, Order Pickup, Shipt-powered same-day delivery — Shipt acquired 2017) rapidly expanded during COVID and remain a meaningful customer-experience differentiator.
Target's AI strategy was publicly accelerated in 2024 with the rollout of generative AI tools across merchandising, supply-chain, and store operations. The Target Generative AI Assistant (deployed across 400,000+ team members) supports real-time customer-and-product questions. Internal AI tools accelerate buyer workflows (assortment planning, vendor negotiations, trend identification). Roundel's ad-platform AI personalizes ad placement at the SKU-customer-store-day level. Inventory and demand-forecasting AI optimizes store-level allocation. The Shipt subsidiary uses AI extensively for shopper-job matching and customer routing. Looking forward, Target's AI focus areas include conversational shopping (in-app AI shopping assistant), supply-chain visibility (post the 2022-2023 inventory-overhang challenges), and continued investment in retail-media-network capabilities.
