📋About Tencent
Updated September 16, 2026Tencent is one of the world's largest technology companies by market capitalization, operating the ubiquitous WeChat super-app (1.3 billion users), QQ messaging, and a vast portfolio of gaming, fintech, cloud, and entertainment properties. Founded in 1998 by Ma Huateng (Pony Ma) in Shenzhen, China, Tencent is a dominant force in Chinese digital life.
Tencent's AI portfolio centers on the Hunyuan family of foundation models, which power AI features across its product ecosystem. Hunyuan models support text generation, image creation, video understanding, and multimodal reasoning. Tencent has also been a major investor in AI companies, with significant stakes in MiniMax (one of China's top AI startups) and other AI ventures. Tencent Cloud provides AI infrastructure and model hosting services for Chinese enterprises.
Tencent's open-weights posture changed materially in August 2026. The Hy4 preview, published on August 28, is a mixture-of-experts model with 770 billion total parameters, roughly 49 billion activated per token, and a context window past one million tokens, distributed on Hugging Face, ModelScope, GitCode and CNB. What separates it from the rest of the family is the license: Hy4 ships under plain Apache 2.0, with no territorial carve-out, no revenue trigger and no monthly-user threshold. Most earlier Hunyuan checkpoints run under the Tencent Hunyuan Community License, which defines its territory as the world excluding the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea and requires a separate agreement above 100 million monthly active users. That older license has not been retired — HunyuanOCR, updated the same day Hy4 shipped, still carries it — so Tencent now publishes frontier-scale weights under fully permissive terms while leaving smaller siblings regionally restricted. Tencent reports Hy4 edging Z.ai's GLM-5.3 and Moonshot's Kimi K3 on an internal expert evaluation, a vendor-run benchmark rather than an independent result.
Tencent's AI strategy leverages its unparalleled distribution within China — WeChat alone is the primary communication, payment, and social platform for over a billion users. Integrating AI capabilities into WeChat (including Mini Programs and enterprise services) gives Tencent the potential to make AI a utility for Chinese daily life. The company's gaming division also uses AI extensively for game development, testing, and player engagement.
