Founded in 2020, TII conducts cutting-edge research across multiple technology domains including AI, quantum computing, cryptography, and autonomous systems.
TII is best known in the AI world for developing the Falcon family of large language models, which were among the first high-quality open-source LLMs and briefly topped the Hugging Face Open LLM Leaderboard. Falcon models (7B, 40B, 180B parameters) were released under permissive licenses and trained on the RefinedWeb dataset, demonstrating that smaller organizations could produce competitive foundation models. TII continues to develop AI research across NLP, computer vision, and robotics.
TII represents the UAE's national investment in becoming a global AI research hub. The institute's open-source approach to AI model development (in contrast to the proprietary strategies of most well-funded labs) has earned it credibility in the global research community, and its Falcon models remain widely used, particularly in applications requiring Arabic language capabilities.
