📋About Torc Robotics

Updated August 26, 2026

Torc Robotics is an autonomous-trucking company founded in 2005 and headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia, and majority-owned by Daimler Truck since 2019 while operating as an independent subsidiary. Its bet is the OEM-backed path to production: developing a Level 4 virtual driver purpose-built for Daimler's Freightliner Cascadia platform, with a joint commercial launch targeted for 2027 on the I-35 corridor between Dallas and Laredo.

Being embedded with a truck manufacturer is Torc's key differentiator — the autonomy system is co-developed with the vehicle it will run on, which matters for safety validation, redundancy, and eventual mass production. Through 2026 the company has focused on building the safety case and regulatory groundwork ahead of driverless launch.

The honest framing: the virtual driver is a genuine learned autonomy stack, and Daimler's backing gives Torc a credible manufacturing and capital path that many independent AV startups lack. But like the rest of autonomous trucking, its commercial driverless operations are still ahead of it, not behind it.
