📋About Volta
Updated August 26, 2026Volta is an AI infrastructure company that builds and operates dedicated GPU capacity for frontier labs — and, unusually, arranges the financing for it as part of the same product. Founded in 2026 by Ricard Boada (chief executive) and Sofia Gumuzio (chief corporate development officer), who together built Brookfield Asset Management's AI infrastructure platform, the company emerged from stealth in August 2026. It is an Nvidia Cloud Partner and describes itself as "the utility of compute."
The commercial debut was a six-year, $10 billion partnership with Anthropic, delivered from a facility in Norway carrying more than 130 megawatts of gross power, built with the crypto-mining firm Bitdeer and running Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems. Volta raised $300 million in a Series A co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital, with Nvidia and Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell participating, at a $2.4 billion valuation. A separate $5 billion infrastructure program with Azora supplies project equity for future deployments.
The model is the interesting part. Most AI startups cannot sign long-term infrastructure contracts because they lack an investment-grade balance sheet, which pushes them onto on-demand capacity at premium prices. Volta's answer is to assemble the credit support, project equity and debt behind each deployment itself, then layer Kubernetes-native cloud software on top — selling creditworthiness and operations together rather than asking the customer to arrange a financing backstop. The company also acquired the team behind Genesis Cloud, one of Europe's earliest GPU-first clouds, running since 2018 and serving more than 20,000 users.
Volta belongs to the "neocloud" tier alongside CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nscale and Lambda Labs — companies that have absorbed much of the AI buildout that hyperscalers preferred to keep off their own balance sheets. It is an infrastructure provider, not a maker of AI software: there is no self-serve product and no published pricing, and capacity is sold through negotiated multi-year contracts to a small number of very large customers.
