📋About Weaviate

Updated June 15, 2026

Weaviate is an open-source vector database company founded in 2019 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The company provides a cloud-native vector database designed for AI applications including semantic search, RAG (retrieval-augmented generation), generative search, and recommendation systems.

Weaviate's database supports hybrid search (combining vector similarity with keyword filtering), multi-tenancy for SaaS applications, and built-in vectorization modules that can automatically convert text, images, and other data into vector embeddings using models from OpenAI, Cohere, Hugging Face, and others. The platform offers both a managed cloud service and self-hosted deployment, with a GraphQL-based API.

Weaviate competes with Pinecone, Qdrant, and Chroma in the vector database market. Its open-source foundation, comprehensive feature set, and cloud-native architecture have made it popular with enterprises building production AI applications. Weaviate's generative search capability — which combines retrieval with LLM generation in a single query — is particularly well-suited for RAG applications where the goal is to generate AI responses grounded in specific data.
