Learning Objectives

  • Understand what agentic wallets are and why AI agents need financial autonomy
  • Evaluate Coinbase's approach to secure agent-controlled transactions
  • Assess the implications of machine-to-machine commerce via the x402 protocol

What Are Agentic Wallets?

Coinbase Agentic Wallets (launched February 11, 2026) are the first wallet infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents. They enable AI systems to autonomously spend, earn, trade, and transact on blockchain networks — without a human manually approving each transaction.

This solves a fundamental problem for AI agents: they need to pay for things (API calls, compute, data) and receive payment for services, but traditional financial systems require human identity and manual authorization. Agentic wallets give AI agents their own programmable financial accounts with security guardrails.

💡Key Concept

Why AI Agents Need Wallets: As AI agents become autonomous — booking travel, managing portfolios, running businesses — they need to transact financially without human intervention for every payment. Agentic wallets let agents hold USDC (stablecoin), pay for APIs, receive revenue, and manage funds on-chain with programmable limits. The x402 protocol enables machine-to-machine payments that have already processed 50 million+ transactions.

How They Work

  • Non-custodial wallets secured in Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs)
  • AI agents authenticate via email OTP; hold and transact in USDC
  • Private keys isolated in secure enclaves, separated from LLM prompts (preventing prompt injection attacks from accessing funds)
  • Programmable guardrails: session caps, transaction limits, compliance-ready KYT (Know Your Transaction) screening
  • x402 protocol: Machine-to-machine payment protocol for API paywalls and programmatic resource access

Available On

Live on Base (Coinbase's Ethereum L2) and select Ethereum mainnet; expanding to Solana, Polygon, and Arbitrum later in 2026. Launch-day integration with OpenAI Agents SDK via Coinbase AgentKit (open source on GitHub).
