Learning Objectives

  • Understand how Overland AI applies AI to off-road ground-vehicle autonomy
  • Evaluate the transition from a DARPA research program to fielded military systems
  • Assess the human-in-the-loop and combat-validation questions around uncrewed ground vehicles

What Is Overland AI?

Overland AI is a defense company, founded and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, that builds ground-vehicle autonomy for the US military. Its two core products are OverDrive, an on-vehicle autonomy stack, and OverWatch, a command-and-control system that lets operators direct autonomous vehicles.

Overland fields these on ULTRA uncrewed ground vehicles for missions including counter-unmanned-aircraft-systems (counter-UAS), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), contested logistics and resupply, and breaching. The technology grew out of DARPA's RACER program, focused on high-speed off-road autonomy, which completed in November 2025.

The company raised a $32 million Series A in January 2025 and a $100 million round in February 2026 led by 8VC, with Point72 Ventures, Valor, and StepStone participating (including $20 million of venture debt). It has worked with the 82nd Airborne, 1st Cavalry, 173rd Airborne, and Marines and SOCOM, and in June 2026 won a Pentagon contract to produce autonomous ground vehicles for the Marine Corps.

💡Key Concept

Off-road ground autonomy: Self-driving on roads is hard; doing it across open terrain — no lane markings, unpredictable obstacles, dust, and slopes — is harder still. Systems like OverDrive use AI perception and planning to move a vehicle at speed through unstructured ground, while OverWatch keeps a human operator directing the mission rather than steering. The open question is how reliably that autonomy holds up in sustained, contested use.

Key Capabilities

  • OverDrive — an on-vehicle autonomy stack for high-speed off-road driving
  • OverWatch — command-and-control software for directing autonomous vehicles
  • ULTRA vehicles — the uncrewed ground vehicles the software is fielded on
  • Mission set — counter-UAS, ISR, contested logistics and resupply, and breaching
  • Military partners — the 82nd Airborne, 1st Cavalry, 173rd Airborne, Marines, and SOCOM
  • DARPA lineage — grew out of the RACER off-road autonomy program (completed November 2025)

⚠️Warning

Arming an uncrewed ground vehicle would raise lethal-autonomy questions; Overland's current missions — ISR, logistics, resupply, and counter-UAS — keep operators in the loop, and that boundary is what to watch. Contested-environment off-road autonomy has largely been demonstrated in exercises rather than sustained combat, so field-proven reliability is not yet established. The company is at an earlier stage, and scale production of autonomous vehicles remains unproven.

Key Takeaways

  • Overland AI builds ground-vehicle autonomy for the US military, pairing the OverDrive on-vehicle stack with OverWatch command-and-control on ULTRA uncrewed vehicles
  • Its technology grew out of DARPA's RACER program, and it won a June 2026 Pentagon contract to produce autonomous ground vehicles for the Marine Corps
  • Current missions keep operators in the loop, but contested-environment autonomy is mostly exercise-demonstrated rather than combat-proven, and scale production is still unproven
