What Is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic capability for non-technical knowledge work, generally available since February 24, 2026. Anthropic described it as "Claude Code for the rest of your work" — bringing the agentic experience developers get from Claude Code to business professionals, analysts, writers and knowledge workers.

Cowork is no longer a separate place to go. On September 16, 2026 Anthropic merged Cowork and ordinary Claude chats into what it calls one Claude. There is no longer a tab to choose: Claude routes a request to the right capability itself, so what Cowork and Claude Design can do is available from any conversation, carrying the context, skills and connectors already attached to it. Anthropic's stated reason is that people used both surfaces and the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged — and that work started in one did not carry into the other. The merge is rolling out on Pro and Max plans over the weeks following the announcement, with more plans to follow. The capabilities below are unchanged; only the way you reach them is.

Cowork's agentic work runs on your desktop and can autonomously:

• Read, create, and edit local files on your computer
• Navigate between applications and synthesize information across sources
• Execute multi-step workflows — moving from research to drafting to formatting without manual handoff
• Connect to enterprise tools via plugins for Google Drive, Gmail, DocuSign, FactSet, and more

How Cowork Differs from Claude Code

Since the September 2026 merge the meaningful split is no longer Cowork against Claude chat — that boundary is gone, and Claude decides which capability a request needs. The split that remains is Cowork's knowledge work against Claude Code's software work: different users, different surfaces, different definitions of a finished task.

Core Capabilities

Autonomous Desktop Agent

Cowork operates as a true desktop agent — not just a chat window. It can:

• Browse your local file system and read documents in context
• Create new files (reports, spreadsheets, presentations) based on instructions
• Edit existing documents with tracked changes
• Move between multiple files and applications to complete multi-step tasks

Enterprise Plugins

Cowork connects to enterprise tools through a growing plugin ecosystem:

• Google Drive — read and write documents, spreadsheets, and slides
• Gmail — draft and send emails, search inbox history
• DocuSign — review and prepare documents for signature
• FactSet — pull financial data for analysis and reporting
• Custom MCP servers — connect to internal databases, APIs, and tools

Enterprise Administration

For organizations deploying Cowork across teams:

Claude Docs and Claude Slides

Launched in beta on September 16, 2026 alongside the merge, these are the first surfaces where Claude produces a document you keep working in rather than a block of text you copy out.

• Claude Docs — ask for a document and you and Claude write it together. You can build it section by section, ask questions about what is there, and comment on finished parts. A doc starts private, and you can share it with other editors who work on it at the same time; collaborators, including Claude, can leave comments.
• Claude Slides — ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the deck. You can edit directly, present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF.
• Anything made with Claude Design, Slides or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on a phone — so a document started on a desktop can be checked from the mobile app while the task is still running.

Both are beta, on paid plans, and Enterprise administrators choose when to turn them on. If you use Claude Design on its own, it keeps working as before. The obvious comparison is Google Docs and Slides with Gemini attached, and the honest read is that Google still has the structural advantage here: its editors are the ones organizations already store their work in, whereas Claude's are new surfaces that have to earn that position.

Cowork runs on the same Claude model family available through the API:

Limitations and Considerations

• Local file work is desktop-bound — the agentic file and application navigation needs the desktop application, though Docs and Slides output opens at a shareable link on any device
• Not embedded in apps — unlike M365 Copilot (inside Word/Excel) or Google Workspace AI (inside Docs/Sheets), Claude connects to your apps via plugins rather than living inside them. Claude Docs and Slides narrow this gap for documents and decks specifically, but they are new destinations rather than AI added to the editors your organization already uses
• Docs and Slides are beta and paid-only — they are not on the free tier, and Enterprise administrators must enable them before anyone in the organization can use them
• Plugin ecosystem is young — fewer integrations than Microsoft or Google's mature ecosystems
• Usage limits — even paid plans have daily usage caps; high-volume automation should use the API
• No image generation — Claude does not generate images (use Midjourney, DALL-E, or Aurora instead)
• Requires trust — giving an AI agent access to local files and enterprise tools requires organizational buy-in on data handling and security policies
