Learning Objectives

  • Understand how Planet Labs converts daily satellite imagery into analytic layers using AI and machine learning
  • Distinguish the value of the satellite constellation itself from the analytics software layered on top
  • Evaluate the surveillance, dual-use, and ground-truth accuracy concerns of persistent daily overhead imaging

What Is the Planet Insights Platform?

Planet Labs operates the largest commercial Earth-observation fleet — more than 200 Dove and SkySat satellites, plus next-generation Pelican and Tanager spacecraft — imaging the entire landmass of the planet every day. That daily-refresh archive is the company's core asset; the AI is the analytics layer built on top of it.

The Planet Insights Platform applies AI and machine learning to turn raw imagery into decision-ready information. Its Planetary Variables convert pixels into analytic layers such as biomass, land-surface temperature, soil water content, and crop growth — what the company describes as delivering "answers, not pixels." A 2025 acquisition of Bedrock Research and onboard NVIDIA Jetson edge compute (running object detection directly in orbit) push the company toward what it calls "Planetary Intelligence."

💡Key Concept

Analytic layers vs. raw imagery: A "crop health" or "change detected" output is not a photograph — it is a model estimate derived from spectral data. Planetary Variables use algorithms to infer conditions on the ground (water content, vegetation vigor) from what the satellites can measure from space. This makes the data far easier to act on, but every layer carries the modeling assumptions and error bars of the algorithm that produced it.

Key Capabilities

  • Daily global monitoring — the Dove fleet images the whole landmass every day, enabling change tracking over time
  • Planetary Variables — ready-to-use analytic layers for biomass, land-surface temperature, soil water content, and crop growth
  • AI and machine learning analysis — the Insights Platform detects, classifies, and quantifies features across large areas
  • Edge compute in orbit — onboard NVIDIA Jetson processors run object detection on satellites before data reaches the ground
  • Government and defense integration — imagery and analytics feed intelligence, monitoring, and mapping workflows

⚠️Warning

Concerns to weigh honestly. Persistent daily overhead imaging of the entire planet raises real surveillance and privacy questions — the same capability that monitors deforestation can monitor people and places. Planet's business is heavily dual-use, with a growing share of revenue from defense and intelligence customers. And the automated analytic layers carry accuracy and ground-truth limits: a "crop health" or "change" signal is a model estimate, not a verified fact. The mass Dove fleet's roughly 3-meter resolution is also coarse compared with tasked high-resolution imagery, so fine detail requires other sensors.

Key Takeaways

  • Planet Labs runs the largest commercial Earth-observation fleet, imaging the whole landmass daily — the constellation is the core asset, and the Insights Platform is the AI analytics layer on top
  • Planetary Variables and machine learning turn raw imagery into decision-ready layers for agriculture, government, and defense customers
  • The honest caveat: daily global imaging raises surveillance and dual-use concerns, and automated analytic layers are model estimates with real accuracy and ground-truth limits, not verified ground observations
