Learning Objectives

  • Understand where robotaxis stand as a commercial business
  • See how a public robotaxi company offers financial transparency into the sector
  • Weigh Pony.ai's scale against robotaxi economics and geographic concentration

What Is Pony.ai?

Pony.ai is one of the scaled leaders in robotaxis — publicly traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker PONY (with a Hong Kong secondary listing). It runs a full Level 4 self-driving stack across both robotaxis and autonomous trucks (robotrucks), operating driverless passenger service in Chinese cities and expanding toward thousands of vehicles across more than twenty cities.

Being publicly traded makes Pony.ai one of the most financially transparent windows into the robotaxi business — first-quarter 2026 revenue was around 34 million dollars, up sharply year over year.

Europe, through Uber

Pony.ai's deployment is no longer China-only. It launched Europe's first commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia in March 2026 with the local mobility operator Verne, and on August 14, 2026 it expanded its partnership with Uber to put more than 2,000 robotaxis across five European cities — Zagreb plus four the companies have not yet named. A Middle East deployment is also planned, and the rollout will be announced in phases.

The division of labour is the part worth noting, because it is the template most non-US operators are now using: Pony.ai supplies the Level 4 autonomy, Uber supplies demand through its booking and payments platform, and a local partner runs the fleet day to day in each market. That structure lets an operator enter a country without building a consumer brand or a depot network there first.

📝Note

Honest framing: Pony.ai's self-driving stack is genuine, load-bearing AI, and it is among the few robotaxi operators at real commercial scale. But robotaxi economics remain challenging industry-wide, regulation differs sharply by country, and most of Pony.ai's deployment is still concentrated in China — the European expansion is announced and partly live rather than complete, with four of the five cities unnamed and no published timetable.

Core Capabilities

  • Level 4 robotaxi service — driverless passenger rides in operating cities.
  • Robotrucks — the same autonomy applied to freight.
  • Multi-city scaling — thousands of vehicles targeted across 20-plus cities.
  • Platform partnerships — 2,000-plus robotaxis planned across five European cities with Uber, building out from Zagreb.
  • Public transparency — reported revenue and fleet metrics as a listed company.
