Crop Production (NAICS 1111) covers row-crop farming (corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, rice), specialty crops (fruits, vegetables, nuts, tree crops), and the broader agricultural-production segment. The US is the world's largest agricultural producer with combined crop-production revenue exceeding $250 billion annually. AI is being applied across crop production. Precision agriculture (variable-rate seeding, fertilization, and irrigation) is the largest AI application — Climate FieldView (Bayer), Granular (Corteva), Trimble Agriculture, Prospera Technologies (acquired by Valmont) all provide ML-powered field-management platforms. Autonomous-farm-equipment is the biggest AI frontier: John Deere has rolled out fully-autonomous 8R tractor with their See & Spray AI weed-detection system, and the company's AI-acquisition strategy (Bear Flag Robotics, Light, Blue River Technology — the original See & Spray creator) has positioned them as the most-AI-forward equipment maker. CNH Industrial (Case IH, New Holland) has its own autonomous-tractor platform via the Raven Industries acquisition. Drone-based crop monitoring (Taranis, Ceres Imaging, Sentera) provides aerial NDVI and pest-detection. Yield-prediction AI (Climate FieldView, Granular) helps farmers and grain traders forecast harvest. Pest and disease detection AI (Taranis, Granular) uses computer vision on field imagery. Newer wave: AI-driven seed-trait optimization at Bayer Crop Science, AlphaFold-derived approaches to crop-protection chemistry.

US farm employment is approximately 2.6 million workers (full-time-equivalent), with the bulk in seasonal labor. Owner-operator farmers face mixed AI pressure — the AI tools enable larger-scale operations with less per-acre labor, accelerating the long-term consolidation trend. Farm-labor jobs face the most direct automation pressure as autonomous tractors, robotic harvesters (especially in specialty crops), and AI-driven irrigation reduce per-acre labor needs. Agronomist and crop-consultant roles are heavily AI-augmented but stable — growers value the human relationship and field-walking expertise. Equipment-dealer service-technician roles are growing in absolute headcount due to the technical complexity of AI-equipped equipment. Agricultural-research roles at Bayer, Corteva, Syngenta are heavily AI-augmented (AI-accelerated breeding, ML-assisted compound discovery). New roles emerging: precision-ag specialist, autonomous-farm-equipment operator, AI-crop-consultant, ag-data-analyst at major input retailers and equipment dealers.
