Learning Objectives

  • Understand what space domain awareness (SDA) is and how Agatha applies AI to it
  • Evaluate how anomaly detection flags satellites behaving abnormally within large constellations
  • Assess the dual-use, attribution, and model-reliability concerns of automated space monitoring

What Is Slingshot Aerospace Agatha?

Slingshot Aerospace provides AI-powered space domain awareness — fusing disparate data about objects in orbit into a single common operating picture using object tracking, astrodynamics, AI, and data fusion. Importantly, Slingshot owns no imaging satellites of its own; it fuses data collected by others.

Agatha is Slingshot's AI system, developed under DARPA's PRECOG program. It detects anomalous behavior within large satellite constellations — flagging spacecraft that are not operating as intended or that may be possible bad actors. Agatha was trained on more than 60 years of simulated constellation data, and the PRECOG effort ran from March 2023 to January 2024. Slingshot serves both government and commercial operators for collision avoidance, space-traffic management, and modeling, simulation, and training.

💡Key Concept

Space domain awareness (SDA): Knowing what objects are in orbit, where they are, and how they are behaving. As constellations grow to hundreds or thousands of satellites, no human can watch each one. Agatha uses AI to learn what "normal" looks like across a constellation and then flag the outliers — a satellite maneuvering unexpectedly, drifting off station, or approaching another object.

Key Capabilities

  • Data fusion — combines object tracking, astrodynamics, and disparate sensor feeds into a common operating picture
  • Anomaly detection — Agatha flags satellites not operating as intended within large constellations
  • Collision avoidance — supports conjunction assessment and space-traffic management
  • Modeling and simulation — provides training and simulation environments for space operations
  • Government and commercial reach — serves both national-security and commercial satellite operators

⚠️Warning

Concerns to weigh honestly. Space domain awareness is inherently dual-use and tied to national security — labeling a satellite a "possible bad actor" is an attribution judgment with real geopolitical stakes. Agatha's anomaly flags are model outputs, and a false positive could mislabel a benign maneuver as hostile. Slingshot's funding is modest relative to the defense-prime scale of the missions it supports, and much of the advertised capability remains at contract or pilot stage. Note also that this Slingshot Aerospace is entirely distinct from "Slingshot AI," an unrelated mental-health company.

Key Takeaways

  • Slingshot Aerospace Agatha is a space-domain-awareness AI that detects anomalous behavior within large satellite constellations, built under DARPA's PRECOG program
  • Slingshot fuses others' data rather than owning imaging satellites, serving government and commercial operators for collision avoidance and space-traffic management
  • The honest caveat: SDA is dual-use and attribution-heavy, Agatha's flags are probabilistic model outputs that can mislabel benign maneuvers, and much capability is still at pilot stage on modest funding
