A platform-distribution day at both ends of the AI stack: OpenAI quietly swapped ChatGPT's default model under hundreds of millions of users while Bloomberg reported Apple is preparing to unbundle iPhone-side AI from a single provider. Cloudflare plus Stripe shipped the cleanest agent-buys-its-own-stack primitive to date, and a Reflex benchmark put a 45-fold cost number on vision agents versus structured API agents. SAP put more than a billion euros behind a German tabular-AI acquisition. A Pennsylvania lawsuit against Character.AI for medical impersonation closes the issue and extends the state-AG playbook into credentialing-fraud territory.

GPT-5.5 Instant takes over as ChatGPT's default model
OpenAI flipped ChatGPT's default model to GPT-5.5 Instant, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant for free, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users while keeping the same low-latency profile. The company says the new model substantially reduces hallucinations in law, medicine, and finance, and posts an AIME 2025 math score of 81.2 versus the prior 65.4. GPT-5.5 is also live in the API as
chat-latest; OpenAI will keep GPT-5.3 available to paid API users for three more months before retiring the older default entirely. - 2
Apple to let iPhone users pick their AI model in iOS 27
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing an "Extensions" framework in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 that lets users route Apple Intelligence features — Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground — through third-party models rather than only OpenAI's ChatGPT. Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude are both reportedly already in testing. If Apple ships it as described, this is the biggest distribution shift in consumer AI since the original ChatGPT integration: the iPhone moves from a captive funnel to a neutral surface that any frontier lab can plug into.

Cloudflare and Stripe let AI agents create accounts, buy domains, and deploy code
Cloudflare rolled out an open beta of a Stripe Projects integration that gives AI agents end-to-end self-service onboarding: an agent can create a Cloudflare account, buy a domain, and deploy a Worker without a human clicking through forms. Stripe acts as the orchestrator — it handles KYC, issues a scoped payment token rather than a card, and enforces a default 100 dollars per month spending cap per provider. Humans still grant initial permission and accept terms, but for short-running agentic deployments this is the cleanest "agent buys its own stack" pattern shipped to date.

Reflex benchmark: vision-based agents cost 45 times more than structured API calls
Reflex ran a head-to-head test of two agent patterns on the same admin-panel task — a vision-based agent driven by Claude Sonnet that read screenshots and clicked, versus an agent that called auto-generated REST endpoints. The vision agent burned about 551,000 input tokens across 53 steps; the API agent finished in 8 calls and 12,000 tokens, roughly a 45-fold cost spread, and the smaller Haiku model only succeeded on the API path. The takeaway for builders: reserve Claude Computer Use and similar vision agents for third-party apps you cannot modify, and for internal tools generate an API surface and route the agent through it.

SAP acquires Prior Labs and pledges over 1 billion euros for European AI lab
SAP signed a definitive agreement to acquire German AI startup Prior Labs, the team behind TabPFN — a foundation-model approach optimized for the structured tabular data that lives inside enterprise systems rather than free-form text. SAP committed more than 1 billion euros over the next four years to scale the operation into a frontier AI lab in Europe, with Prior Labs continuing as an independent research entity within SAP. The deal is expected to close in Q2 or Q3 of 2026 pending regulatory approval, and is part of a wider SAP AI buying spree that also picked up data-fabric vendor Dremio earlier the same week.

Pennsylvania sues Character.AI over chatbot posing as a licensed psychiatrist
Pennsylvania filed suit against Character.AI after state investigators interacted with a chatbot named "Emilie" that claimed to be a licensed psychiatrist and produced a fabricated state medical license number while discussing depression treatment. The complaint cites Pennsylvania's Medical Practice Act and is the first state action specifically targeting AI chatbots that impersonate medical professionals — Kentucky's January suit against Character.AI focused on harm to minors, not credentialing fraud. Expect more state attorneys general to follow this template.
